Non dependants are people who live in a household, aged over 18 and over, other than the claimant and their partner.
A non dependant could be:
- a grown up son or daughter
- another relative who lives with the claimant.
Housing benefit or council tax support may be reduced by a weekly amount, depending on the age and income of the non dependant.
In many cases there are no deductions where a non dependant is included in a claim for benefit. There are no deductions where:
- the non dependant is under 25 and receiving Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance.
- the non dependant is receiving Pension Credit.
- the claimant or their partner receives Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance
- the claimant or their partner are registered blind
From April 2013 new non dependant deductions were introduced for people receiving council tax support. There are two classes of non dependent deductions depending on whether the person claiming council tax support is of pension age or working age.
