Keeping you posted: Winter Service updates
Our full winter service is currently in operation which means we will treat all primary and secondary routes when temperatures fall below freezing. Please be aware that we cannot grit all 651 kilometres of road throughout the borough or respond to individual requests for gritting or salt bins. Our priority is to ensure that the network of treated roads is kept reasonably free of ice and snow.
If severe weather causes bin collections to be delayed or cancelled we will provide advice on our Bin collection days and dates web page.

How we provide the Winter Service
The Winter Service runs from the start of November until the end of March each year.
Bury Council bases its decision to grit, or not grit, on the Open Road Winter Forecast Service provided by the Met Office. Once a decision to grit has been taken the target is to grit all routes within 4 hours. The first hour allows for calling out the gritting crews from standby and then 3 hours to complete the gritting.
The Winter service we provide aims as far as is reasonably possible to keep selected roads and pavements clear of snow and ice in severe winter weather conditions and allow the safe movement of road users including buses, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Also part of the service is the supply of a limited number of self help salt bins for use on public roads and footways in key locations. These are re-filled each year for the start of the winter season and then as required, subject to availability of salt supplies.
Be prepared for winter
Winter weather can be severe and can quickly disrupt our daily lives. Being aware and better prepared can help us, our families and our communities to stay safe, warm and healthy throughout the winter months.
