Crime and disorder

The council has a legal obligation to work with police and other local organisations to reduce crime, disorder and improve the safety of communities within the borough.

It is the Crime and Disorder Act 1988 which requires us to produce a strategy every three years, which sets out how we intend to achieve our goals on a local level. The name of the group that tackles crime, disorder, drug abuse and community safety is called the Community Safety Partnership. The partners involved include;

  • Police
  • Council
  • Probation Service
  • NHS Bury
  • Greater Manchester Police Authority
  • Fire Service
  • Victim Support
  • Magistrates Court
  • Crown Prosecution Service

Offender support

The Prison Service and National Probation Service can give advice to offenders on such issues as:

  • fair treatment in prison
  • what happens before and after release
  • education and training in prison
  • resettlement
  • community work
  • preparation for employment and job clubs
  • money and benefits
  • drug and alcohol problems
  • community rehabilitation

Bail hostels

There are seven approved premises (formerly Probation Hostels) in Greater Manchester providing accommodation for up to 1,100 people a year who have been dealt with by the courts.

They provide accommodation for people before and after sentence especially when there is good reason for offenders not to return to their previous address. The premises have strict rules and are staffed by trained workers.
