Holcombe Moor firing programme

If you are planning to walk or ride in the Holcombe or Hawkshaw area across the "Danger Zone" of Holcombe Moor Training Area, you can use this web page to help you find out if "Live Firing" is programmed.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) inform the public of when the "Danger Zone" and the public rights of way across it are strictly out of bounds. The Holcombe Moor Training Area "Danger Zone" is clearly indicated on most Ordnance Survey maps.

Changes to the firing programme 

The Holcombe Moor firing programme is liable to change after publication creating additional access periods.  The latest information about training activities can be obtained by telephoning 01204-882991.

Frequently asked questions

What time of day could live firing take place?

Live firings are:

  • 1 October to 31 March, 7am to 10.30pm; and
  • 1 April to 30 September, 7am to 11.30pm.

There is no live firing after 3 pm on Sundays.

Please do not attempt to touch or remove anything from Holcombe Moor Training Area, it may be dangerous.

How will I know that live firing is taking place?

The red flags by day and the red lamp by night indicate that the range is active and live firing is taking place. The Range Danger Area is strictly out of bounds to the public. The public have access to the public rights of way on the remainder of the training area at all times but should be aware that dry training may be in progress with blank and pyrotechnic ammunition.
