The origin of the name 'Whitefield' is unclear. One theory is that the name derives from the Flemish weavers who spread out their fabrics to bleach in the sun, the other theory is that the name is a corruption of Wheatfields, the area being used as farmland. Located 5 miles to the north-northwest of the city of Manchester along the south side of the River Irwell, Whitefield is predominately a residential multi-cultural centre, which boasts a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Events
Whitefield hosted its very first Christmas Farmers Market in 2010. Following the success of the market, a programme of farmers markets was delivered throughout 2011. 3 more markets are scheduled for 2012. There are other events in and around the Whitefield area including the popular annual Boz Park fun day and for the first time in 2011 a Medieval Halloween Festival which will be highlighted on the annual calendar.
Medieval Halloween Festival
2011 saw the first Halloween Festival in the Borough. The event is fully supported by Bury Council and GM Police to encourage children to celebrate the holiday responsibly. With ghoulish tales, pumpkin carving, lantern parades, mystical creature creations, monster masks, 12ft fully animatronics dragon led by the Goblin Queen, minstrels corner, creepy animals, bats, falconry, archery, tarot, hog roast and cider tent. Plus a variety of stalls selling fairtrade and new age products/clothing. 2012 Festival will include a week long of activities pulling other events around the Borough, starting Wednesday 24 October until Wednesday 31 October.
Love Whitefield Litter Campaign
Following the success of Love Prestwich Litter Campaign, Whitefield has taken lead on improving environmental areas and educating members of the public, school children and businesses about litter and how to dispose of waste safely.
