The Growth Deal between Central Government and Greater Manchester Combined Authority includes funding for transport, one element of which is Active Travel Networks, including walking and cycling routes.

Bury has a provisional allocation of £650,000 over three years for the Radcliffe East Cycleway, which is the completion of the long-planned Bury to Bolton railway path.

  • Phase 1 saw the extension of the Bradley Fold railway path early in 2016 and the provision of a link from it to Launceston Road in 2018.
  • Phase 2 saw a new link from Buckingham Drive past Lower Spen Moor constructed in 2018. This will connect westwards with another shared use path constructed by Peel and Bellway Homes as part of their Spen Moor housing development.
  • Phase 3, in 2021, has seen the provision of a signalised crossing of Ainsworth Road and the making of a connection between Wilton Close and Leander Close.

The final section, between Hardman Street and the Spen Moor path, is being planned.
