Non dependant deductions

Non dependants are people, aged over 18, who live in a household other than the claimant and their partner.

A non dependant could be:

  • a grown up son or daughter
  • a friend
  • a parent
  • another relative who lives with the claimant

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support may be reduced by a weekly amount, depending on the age and income of the non dependant.

There are no deductions where:

  • the non dependant is under 25 and receiving Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance (assessment phase)
  • the non dependant is receiving Pension Credit
  • the claimant or their partner receives Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payments
  • the claimant or their partner are registered blind
