If you have large unwanted household items, you can arrange a bulky waste collection or if they're in good condition, you could donate them to a charity or community scheme.

Bulky waste collections

Most large unwanted or broken household items can be collected by our bulky waste disposal service. The most common collections are for:

  • mattresses
  • TVs
  • washing machines
  • fridges
  • freezers
  • carpets.

Bulky waste collection charge

Each bulky waste collection costs £45 and includes up to five items per collection booked.

If you receive Council Tax benefit, you can request one bulky waste collection for half the price. This discounted cost is applicable to one collection of up to five items, once per year. To take advantage of this discount, please call us on 0161 253 5353 to book your bulky waste collection.

You should be aware of the following conditions for bulky waste collections:

  • some larger items may count as more than one item, for example a double wardrobe will be counted as four items
  • you cannot add extra items after you've booked a collection
  • no refund will be given if;
    • you cancel your collection
    • the items are not available at the time of collection
    • you reduce the number of items to be collected.

Request a bulky waste collection

Bulky waste collections can be booked online. Before booking a collection, please note that the charge is non-refundable.

We usually have collection dates available at a week's notice or less, but you can book a collection up to three weeks in advance.

After you've booked a bulky waste collection

After you've booked and paid for a bulky waste collection, you should prepare your items for collection. Before your collection date, we ask that you:

  • leave your items at your usual bin collection point, front garden or driveway
  • ensure the items are whole and are not broken into pieces
  • keep soft furnishing dry and covered.

We are not able to collect items from:

  • your back garden, yard, shed or garage
  • inside your property, this includes blocks of flats.

Some larger items are counted as more than one item, due to their size. The count number an item is recognised as is given in brackets after the item name, as follows:

Unacceptable bulky waste items

We are not able to offer our bulky waste collection service for the following items:

  • bagged household waste
  • dog kennels: large
  • fence panels
  • fence posts
  • fitted wardrobes
  • garages
  • gas bottles
  • glass items, including shower screens or florescent sunbed tubes
  • gym equipment: large
  • kitchens: fitted
  • kitchen worktops
  • ladders: double extension
  • mirrors
  • musical instruments, such as a piano
  • sheds
  • window frames.
