Starting building works

You may begin work at any time after you have submitted a Full Plans or Building Notice application, as long as you've given at least 48 hours notice.

Please note that if the work to be carried out does not comply with Building Regulations, your application may need to be resubmitted or the materials replaced.

Request a site inspection

The person carrying out the building work, whether yourself or your builder, is required to notify the Building Control officer at the following stages where appropriate:

  • excavation or foundations
  • foundation concrete
  • over site
  • damp-proof course
  • foul water drains
  • surface water drains
  • electrical wiring prior to covering
  • occupation prior to completion
  • completion.

The statutory framework for inspections as noted above may not be appropriate to all types of work, such as loft conversions. In order for us to provide the best possible service, the Building Control Officer may request notification when other stages are reached, for example; roof timbers.

Inspections will be carried out as necessary and if requested before 10am, can generally be made the same day.
