How are we doing?

Bury Council is making good progress in the way it delivers services and manages resources.  Having been acclaimed in 2003 as "the most improved council" by the Audit Commission – the council's official watchdog – we have continued to improve.  Without getting too technical, our overall service rating (as judged by external inspectors) has risen by 50% since 2002 whilst corporate capacity – the glue that holds council services together – has increased by 20%.  As a result, Bury is now considered to be a 'good' council'.

Check the 2006 Annual Report for more infomation.

The Audit Commission reviews the council's position annually through a process known as the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA).  Further details of the results together with an explanation of the process can be found on the Council's Performance Management page.

When we compare ourselves to similar councils, we find ourselves performing well above average at lower cost.  Bury is close to the bottom of the league when it comes to spending and with Council Tax levels kept under control, we have built up a reputation for prudence.  How money has been used in the past can be found on the Statement of Accounts page whilst our spending plans are set out on the Revenue Budget page.

Improving services, however, is not just about money.  Our internal performance management framework keeps a close watch on service activity by monitoring key indicators every three months.

Training for councillors and council employees is increasing skills and confidence across the organisation whilst new technology, and working in partnership with other agencies, is helping to build capacity in support of our ambitions for the Borough.
