• widening footpaths and pedestrian waiting areas
• controlled pedestrian crossings (where pedestrians are given priority with traffic signals to cross the road)
• making turns sharper at road junctions (slowing vehicle turning movements to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety at road junctions)

Description of feature

Converting mini-roundabouts to T- junctions simplifies vehicle movements, improving overall pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Description of feature

A dedicated path for cyclists, physically separated from vehicles and pedestrians.

Description of feature

A pedestrian/cycle crossing with push button facilities and traffic signals for vehicles.

• Existing uncontrolled crossing across Manchester Road near Gigg Lane to be upgraded to a Toucan crossing

Description of feature

A pedestrian crossing marked by black and white stripes on the road. Drivers must stop if pedestrians are waiting or crossing.

Where the zebra crossing will be located

• Across Hurst Street to the west of School Street. Providing a safer route for school children and other pedestrians.

The footpath will be widened along Hurst St and up to the new Pimhole Road crossing to improve access for pedestrians and allow shared use for cyclists.

A raised section of road with ramps either side which aims to slow down traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

Description of feature

A low-traffic road designed to prioritise cyclists and pedestrians, by installing traffic calming measures and raised road tables and removing mini-roundabouts.

To keep the community informed about when work will begin at each of the project areas, advance warning signs will be placed at the roadside shortly before work is scheduled to start. 

Funding for active travel schemes comes from a range of sources, including the UK Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), which saw Greater Manchester awarded £1.07bn to help deliver the Bee Network.

We will try to maintain vehicular access to all businesses and properties during the works, but access may be limited when we are removing or replacing the footway and, or road surface.

All the emergency services will be notified well in advance of the commencement of the works and will be made aware of any restrictions in place.

Should emergency vehicles require emergency access to residential or business properties affected by the works, the contractor shall direct and, or escort them through the works.

Our Engineering Services Team will co-ordinate and supervise the works from start to finish.

The contractors we employ are responsible for ensuring works are carried out safely. If you notice anyone tampering with or taking down signs or barriers, especially at night, please call the emergency number provided. Your call could prevent an accident.

Criminals have been known to use works on the highway as an excuse to get into nearby properties to commit a crime.

If you are approached by anyone claiming to be from Bury Council or a utility company, always ask for ID.

If you are unsure, don't let them in and call the police.
