Search the library catalogue

We are working on merging the catalogues but for now you will need to access both to search for the information you require. Before searching the catalogues, you may want to view a summary of catalogue resources.

Reference material and help with research

Archives and family history, known locally as The Centre for Cultural Collections, has books on all aspects of Bury's history. The majority of these books are for reference only but we do have a small selection that can be borrowed if you have a Bury library card. We also have a range of historical publications for sale. Additional material is available on microfilm or microfiche format. Microfilm/fiche viewers are available but must be booked in advance. You can also use our computers to search Ancestry for free. All research facilities are open during normal opening hours.

The search room

The search room is available to consult original archives, maps, local publications, church record transcripts etc. You can also access scanned copies of a selection of trade directories online. We do not require advanced notice but if you are able to contact us before you visit with a list of items needed and reference numbers, which can be obtained from the online catalogues, we can have everything ready for when you arrive.

Items are collected at the end of each session and there is a limit of the number of items you can view. Lockers are available to store personal effects and only pencils can be used in the search room.

Please contact us if you wish to arrange a visit.

Project work

Staff from the Archives service have worked with Council colleagues and other agencies to produce study resources utilising primary source materials from the Archives and local history collections. Please see our project work page for details of Bury Remembers the First World War, Cotton Threads, and Safety in Numbers projects.
