The origin of the name 'Whitefield' is unclear. One theory is that the name derives from the Flemish weavers who spread out their fabrics to bleach in the sun, the other theory is that the name is a corruption of Wheatfields, the area being used as farmland. Essentially Whitefield is a residential community, its proximity to the M60 and City of Manchester ensures many flourishing industries as well as retail parks.
