Frequently asked questions

I think that the trees in the verge along my street are in need of pruning, will the Council prune them?

Trees along the streets are managed to ensure that they are safe and do not lead to any hazard to users of the Highway.

There are around 3700 trees planted along the highways and streets of Bury. These trees make a valuable contribution to the landscape of the Borough. They help improve the quality of the environment by:
  • improving the visual appearance of streets by breaking up the lines of the buildings
  • absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
  • providing shelter from the wind
All trees growing on the highway are inspected regularly and a programme of pruning work is carried out by specially trained staff, at four year intervals.

A list of streets along with the year in which each street will be pruned is available at the Street Tree Pruning Programme page. For enquiries about tree pruning, please contact:

My neighbour has some very tall trees along their boundary with my garden and they are blocking light. Is there a law that enables the Council to force my neighbour to deal with them?

There has been a lot of concern raised about these issues and it is a common problem. There are currently no legal restrictions directly relating to the height that hedges or trees are allowed to grow but this may be addressed by future legislation.

There is a large tree in the park that overhangs my garden, blocking out sunlight for most of the day. Will the Council prune the tree?

The Council inspects its trees regularly to ensure that they are maintained safely. If you have concerns that can be accommodated by maintenance in accordance with good practice the problem may be addressed. Tree works are not routinely carried out solely to alleviate light restriction or overhang as this may disfigure the tree or promote decline.
