Bury Council, acting as the Highway Authority, is required to monitor and coordinate all works carried out on the highway network. This includes statutory undertaker’s (utilities) work, for example, water, gas, electricity and telecommunication companies in addition to the our own road maintenance and improvement schemes.

All utility companies working on the highway have to do so in accordance with the provisions of the New Roads and Street Works Act and the Traffic Management Act. They must comply with national requirements regarding:

  • safety of excavations;
  • reinstatement standards;
  • qualifications of staff; and
  • notifying us of their proposed works.
