The module consists of two sessions lasting approximately 45 minutes and 1 hour respectively and is entitled “Walk and Talk”. Worksheets accompany the module as follow-up work.
The first session discusses how to keep safe as a pedestrian, a cyclist and a passenger. The aim of the walk is then explained.
The second session involves taking the children on a walk around their school, looking and talking about the road traffic and the hazards/dangers around their area. Teacher participation is essential and volunteer helpers are desirable so the class can be split if necessary into two supervised groups.
Year 6 - Risk and independent travel
Transition and teenagers road safety is an issue because a growing need for independence clashes with a change that brings about more hazards than this age group will have faced before. Issues such as independent travel, changing journeys and distractions can all have an adverse affect on any child’s safety.
This involves class sessions designed to raise awareness of road safety and the change from Primary to Secondary School. During these sessions we will cover an overview of road safety, attitudes to road safety and how change affects them.
