Education for secondary schools

The Road Safety Unit aims to visit all year 7, year 8, year 9, year 10 and year 11 pupils each year.

The sessions are detailed below.

Year 7 – Risk and independent travel

This session is an hour long but can be minimised if your PSHE lesson time is less.  The session involves identifying differences between acceptable and unacceptable risk, which we take in life, and how road safety risk can be reduced.  The session has a dramatic and exciting climax, which has the pupils, totally engrossed in what may happen if they take an unacceptable risk.

Year 8 – Actions and behaviour

This is a one hour session using a DVD called Time Out. The session investigates the attitude that young people have towards road safety, and the consequences of their actions.

They will be more able to recognise the road safety issues that they are exposed to on a daily basis and will gain a greater understanding of how their behaviour impacts on this.

Year 9 – Consequences

A one off session aimed at Year 9 pupils.  The session has been devised because statistics have shown that children of this age start to meet and get involved with peers who are involved in car theft and travel in stolen vehicles.  The session deals with the consequences of getting involved in car crime.  How society and fellow criminals treat them. The aim of this lesson is to highlight the potential dangers of any involvement be it directly or indirectly in car crime.

This session looks at car crime from two sides, the pedestrian hit by a stolen car and also a young person that has stolen a car.

Year 10 - Alcohol

This topic involves a discussion that relates to the effects of alcohol and a better understanding of the consequences on pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The session uses a power point presentation, replica alcoholic drinks and beer goggles to get the message across. The aim of this session is to equip young people with the information that will enable them to make their decision.

Year 11 – Pre-driver

The pre-driver presentation is an interactive one hour in-class session with the option of a practical session which will be run by British School of Motoring (BSM). In addition to the session a pre-driver handbook is given to each pupil containing information regarding:
  • Routes to their licence (car, scooter, moped)
  • The law
  • Theory and practical test
  • Driving in adverse conditions
  • General advice and awareness
The class based session presented by the Road Safety Unit  involves discussion about crash causation, hazard perception and observation skills
