29 March 2007: 25th birthday celebrations for care unit in Tottington
A service which supports adults with learning disabilities in Tottington is celebrated its 25th birthday on March 18.
Woodbury Accommodation was originally opened as a hostel 25 years ago by local justice of the peace Aubrey Clayton who was the Chairman of Bury Health Authority at the time. Based in Wesley Street the building was joint funded between the health authority, and social services. It was used as a stepping stone by people returning to Bury who had been living in a hospital environment. People spent time at Woodbury forming relationships and learning skills, to prepare to live as independently as possible in a home of their own.
Over this quarter of a century Woodbury has helped to re-locate, well over a hundred people into the Bury area.
Currently Woodbury is split into four units, a short stay, rehabilitation, pre-independence and an emergency service. It also manages a small number houses and flats throughout the borough. There is a large range of support provided from full 24 hour care to small amounts of assistance with budgeting and catering skills.
It is hoped that Woodbury will relocate to new premises in the near future, continuing to provide a valued service to the residents of Bury.
Councillor Tim Chamberlain Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing said: "The unit has undergone a massive transformation and still forms part of a vital support network for residents living in Bury. I look forward to wishing them many Happy Birthdays to come."
