Nuisance
Animal nuisance
Barking Dogs: Bury Council has a dog warden service that will deal with problems caused by irresponsible dog ownership such as loud barking dogs.
Dog Fouling: The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 came into force on 1 May 1997. This Act means that it is illegal to fail to clear up after your dog "forthwith" if it fouls any land which is open to the air and to which the public have access.
The dog warden service can also help you to find your dog if it is missing. For more information visit the Dog Warden Scheme page.
Ball games
Every summer the council receives a lot of complaints about young people playing ball games in public places. Therefore in response to queries we have developed a Ball games advice leaflet which explains the issues surrounding ball games and offers advice as to how to tackle the issue.
Bonfires
Bonfires can cause localised air pollution and annoy neighbours. Follow the national guidelines to avoid causing nuisance to others, or contact the council to find out about alternative ways to dispose of your waste.
Bonfire guidelines from the National Society for Clean Air and Environmental Protection :
- only burn dry material
- never burn household rubbish, rubber tyres, or anything containing plastic, foam or paint
- never use old engine oil, meths or petrol to light the fire or encourage it
- avoid lighting a fire in unsuitable weather conditions - smoke hangs in the air on damp, still days and in the evening
- be considerate to your neighbours, if it is windy, smoke may be blown into neighbours gardens and across roads
- avoid burning when air pollution in your area is high or very high, check the weather forecast or the air quality website
Neighbours
The Council can help with practical solutions towards resolving disputes whether it be over a noise issue of perhaps a dispute over a tall tree.
How a reported nuisance is dealt with depends on an assessment of the dispute.
For more information visit the Anti-social Behaviour section.
Noise
Excessive noise can cause great distress to many people. It may range from the occasional event to a regular occurance which may affect your daily life.
These problems could include:
- loud music or television
- barking dogs
- DIY activities
- burglar alarms
- vehicle alarms
- industrial and construction site noise
- noise from places of entertainment
Noise nuisance is covered by Part III of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This law empowers local authorities to deal with noise from fixed premises.
