Crime and Disorder

The Crime and Disorder Act 1988 places a duty on the police and local authority to work together to reduce crime, disorder and improve the safety of communities within the borough. The Act recognises that sustained improvements are only likely to be achieved through the formation of partnerships between the police, local authorities and local communities.

The Act requires the Partners to produce a strategy every three years, aimed at reducing crime and improving safety in order to promote "the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of their areas." In developing that strategy an audit of crime and disorder in the borough is required and consultation is needed to obtain the views of local people.

The Bury Safety Community Partnership is responsible for producing the Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy every three years and also undertakes a comprehensive Crime and Disorder audit which will provide a detailed review of the level and patterns of crime, disorder and drug misuse in the borough.

It also sets out measures that have been put in place to create an effective reduction in these areas.
