What is emergency planning?

Emergency planning is the process whereby the council prepares to deal with major incidents. The aim of emergency planning is to provide appropriate arrangements and procedures that enable officers of the Council's Emergency Management Team (and their support staff) to manage any major emergency should it occur and to enable Departments to continue to provide normal statutory services so far as is possible.

Emergency planning officers provide the focus within the community for the discharge of local authority civil protection responsibilities, in close co-operation with the emergency services, local authority departments, industrial and commercial organisations including the utilities, government departments such as the Ministry of Defence or Department of Health, and voluntary agencies.
