The town of Whitefield was created in 1866, previously being a part of the Manor of Pilkington, together with Outwood, Ringley, Unsworth, Lily Hill, Moss Lane, Stand and Besses o' th' Barn. Whitefield and Unsworth is on the southern side of the Borough with the townships of Prestwich to the south and Radcliffe to the west with Bury town bordering the north. The Local Area Partnership covers the electoral wards of Besses, Pilkington Park and Unsworth and includes villages and districts such as Oak Bank, Sunnybank, Hollins, and Lily Hill.
