Prestwich is situated on the Northern side of the valley of the River Irwell, and is still known as ‘the village’, Prestwich Local Area Partnership comprising of electoral wards Holyrood, Sedgley and St Mary’s. The first recorded use of the name Prestwich was in 1194, the name meaning ‘the welling of a priest’ from the Old English words ‘preost’ and ‘’wic’ with the centre of Prestwich focusing on the Longfield Shopping Centre and function. Prestwich has a diverse community made up of people of all ages, and from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures. Along with Whitefield it welcomes the second largest Jewish community in the country and includes communities like Simister, Rainsough, and Kirkhams.
