Bury Sports Development are working towards creating a healthier, more active Bury by contributing to the government target of:
- 1 million people taking part in more sport by 2012-13; and
- 1 million people taking part in more physical activity by 2010-13.
To help monitor the work of the team, information has been collected from both local and national surveys to provide some key statistics.
Key statistics for Bury
Statistics about adults taking part in sport
- 21.3% of the adult population in Bury participate in 3 x 30 minutes of moderate intensity sport and physical activity a week. Men are more active than women in Bury. (National figure 21.6%, Northwest figure 21.4%).
- 15.9% of adults in Bury do at least 3 days a week x 30 minutes moderate sport participation a week. (National figure 16.6%, Northwest figure 17.1%).
- 16.7% adults received tuition from an instructor or coach in the last 12 months. (National figure 17.5%, Northwest figure 15.9%).
- 12.9% of all Bury adults have taken part in organised competitive sport in the last 12 months. (National figure 14.4%, Northwest figure 14.2%).
- 71% of all adults were satisfied with local sports provision. (National figure 68.4%, Northwest figure 68.1%).
- 27.5% of the adult population in Bury are members of a sports club where they take part in sport. (National figure 24.1%, Northwest figure 24.2%).
- 16.5% of Bury adult population is obese (15.6% 2008/09 – 0.9% decrease).
- 24.6% of Bury adult population stated they did ‘no physical activity’ in a week (20.9% 2008/09 – 3.7% decrease).
- 11.6% of Bury adults did 5 moderate sessions of physical activity lasting at least 30 minutes each week (10.1% 2008/09 – 1.5% decrease).
Statistics about children and young people taking part in sport
- 74% of pupils from the Broadoak Sports College and 68% of pupils from the Woodhey Specialist Science College participate in 3 hours high quality PE and school sport each week. (National figure 51%).
- 30% of pupils from the Broadoak Sports College and 43% of pupils from the Woodhey Specialist Science College participate in 5 hours PE and sport each week.
- 84% of pupils from both Broadoak and Woodhey are involved in Intra school competition . (National figure 69%).
- 36% of pupils from Broadoak and 38% of pupils from Woodhey are involved in Inter-school competition. (National figure 44%).
Statistics about volunteering in sport
- 5.7% of the adult population in Bury contributes at least one hour a week volunteering in sport. (National figure 4.7%, Northwest figure 4.8%).
- 20% of pupils from Broadoak and 15% of pupils from Woodhey are involved in Leadership & volunteering. (National figure 19%).
Statistics about the community
- The total population of 0 to 19 year olds is 23.6% and falling.
- The population of Bury is aging, with a greater proportion of increase in over 65 year olds.
