Members of Openshaw Park gardening club

The Openshaw Park Gardening Club was first established in 2002. It is a small club, but not exclusive and other volunteers wishing to come along and join in are most welcome.   No previous gardening knowledge is required, just a willingness to learn and enjoy being outdoors whilst creating something for all to enjoy.

Work includes carrying out a range of jobs aimed at giving people without their own garden the opportunity to garden in their local Park within a friendly and sociable atmosphere.  Club members help with landscaping ideas and planting, create new flower beds and shrub areas, learn about gardening on a large scale and over a period of time gain satisfaction from a sense of ownership of what has been achieved.

The Club is currently in the process of creating and planting up a new rockery, and building and planting up a pair of stone–built planters around the ladies Bowling Pavilion and Park Ranger Base.

How to get involved

The Club meets most mornings during the summer months and sometimes through the winter months if the weather is fine, usually between approximately 10am and 12.30pm. The club is flexible and other times could be accommodated if there was sufficient interest. If you would like to become part of the Gardening Club, simply come along to the Park Ranger Base in the morning and you will generally find someone to talk to about getting involved.

The Veterans ('Vets Club') meets regularly throughout the week and indeed throughout the year for practice and socialising. The ladies club also meets regularly and both clubs are in leagues with several match days taking placed. There are two self-managed greens at Openshaw Park.

How to get involved

If you want to join any of the bowling clubs you should visit the Veterans Bowling Pavilion during the afternoon and you will generally find someone to talk to about membership.
