The towpath of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal for 2 kms between Coney Green and Elton Reservoir was improved for use by pedestrians and cyclists in 2001. The £195,000 contract was funded by the North West Development Agency as part of the development of Route 6 of the National Cycle Network. The canal's owner, British Waterways have been commissioned to maintain the path for 25 years.
