Elton Reservoir

Manchester Bolton Bury Canal Manchester Bolton Bury Canal Towpath with Cyclists

Description

The 56 acre Elton Reservoir was completed in 1842 as a water storage body for the nearby Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal. In 1858 a Sailing Club was established and still manages the water today. The reservoir is extensively used by school, scout and community groups as well as Club members for sailing, windsurfing and fishing.

How to get there

By car it can be reached from the A58 Bolton Road. National Cycle Route 6 passes right next to it. A walk around the reservoir starting at Radcliffe Metrolink station is described in the Walks around Bury book.

Further information

See the previously mentioned Walks around Bury booklet. There are several books available on the history of the canal at Bury library.
