The Social Inclusion Unit

This part of the Library Service was developed to work with and for people and groups who would not normally use the library; this may be because of access problems, social reasons or simply because they do not think the library has anything to offer. The aim of The Social Inclusion Unit is to establish services by working with people so that the end result meets their needs.

As part of this process the Outreach Library Service was established and this led to the opening of eight small libraries across the borough. These libraries were set up in partnership with the community, involving Tenants and Residents Associations, Churches and other organisations. Local people were involved from the start in the research, planning, selection of furniture and books and also in the publicity for the Library. In this way people really feel that the Library belongs to them.

Services to cultural minorities, disabled people, older people and people in residential care amongst others are also the responsibility of The Social Inclusion Unit.
