Internet search facilities - search engines

Search engines

Search engines allow you to search for web sites on specific subjects,
  • Most allow you to search either categories (subject headings for sites) or keyword (searches for a word or words in the text of sites).
  • Use a category search for broad subjects (e.g. Business). Some sites specialise in category searches, e.g Yahoo!, Look Smart and UK Plus.
  • Use keyword for specific subjects. You can search for more than one word by putting AND between each word - for more sophisticated searching, consult the help screen or advanced search option for the search engine you are using.
Try to use unique words e.g. to find something about the current land speed record use the following terms - Richard Noble, Land speed record, thrust ssc, Andrew Green.
Whichever approach you use, the results will be presented as a list of sites with a summary. You can then select to look at sites that look interesting.

If you can't find what you want using one search engine, try another!

Metasearch engines

These search several search engines at the same time - good if you're searching for something very specific or want a very comprehensive search.
