Centre facilities
Whitefield Library lends books, DVDs and a few videos. We also have a range of, talking books and language courses on CD and tape, and some reference materials. There are five computers in the main library one of which is linked to a scanner and there are a further 12 computers in the IT suite/homework room. These computers are only available for booking when there are no classes or no homework club running. Access to computers and the internet is free of charge to use but we do make a charge for any printing. It is advisable to book a computer in advance by either telephoning on the number below or in person.
There are photocopying and fax facilities. Homework club runs on two afternoons per week (Term time only) from 3.30pm.See link below for further details. There is a separate Children’s Library which is shortly to have it’s own computer. There is a weekly story time for the under 5s on Tuesday afternoons 2.15pm – 2.45pm We offer a small selection of daily newspapers and some magazines. Library staff are able to offer a ‘Get You Started’ course on Monday afternoons. These must be booked in advance and we will give a basic introduction to setting up an email account and using the internet
Reading groups
Whitefield Library and Adult centre has three reading groups. One meets on the third Monday of every month from 7.00pm – 8.00pm. All are welcome.
The other is a Men’s Reading Group which is open to any man that wishes to join. There is no agenda to follow, just men reading books and discussing them from their own perspective. Usually there is a choice of 4 or 5 titles and everyone can read as few or as many as they wish. No one is under any obligation to finish a book and requests for new reading sets are welcome. The following dates are for forthcoming Men’s Reading Group meetings :- 28th April, May BH no meeting, 23rd June, 28th July, Aug BH no meeting, 22nd September,27th October,24th November, December –Christmas break, 26th January 2009. A Council Information Point at your local library – bringing council services closer to home.
As an extension to the services the library currently offers customers can now make non-cash payments for all council services which includes Council Tax, rent, car parking fines, dog fouling fines etc.We can also take payments for all library charges such as book fines, audio visual loan hire, computer print outs etc. Payments can be made during the times the library is open including late evening openings and at the weekend. Customers can also access other council services by either using the Freephone situated in the library or by asking a member of staff for help. We offer a quality ‘First Stop’ customer enquiry/referral service by assisting with more Council and non-Council enquiries. We can also accept all completed council forms or staff can help you fill in these forms. We are able to photocopy and verify any documentation neede in support of applications which we can forward to the appropriate Council Dept on your behalf.

Adult Learning
There are various courses now running in the Phillips Room, a new general purpose classroom and a number of pottery courses in the Pilkington Pottery Studio. IT courses also run in the newly refurbished IT Suite. Prospective students can enrol at Whitefield for courses either at the Whitefield Centre or any other centre in the borough.
