News: The Road To Jericho Education Pack now available
Bury Archives Service has once again been working in partnership with Bury Church of England High School and Greater Manchester County Record Office to produce an education resource for Key Stage Three history studies. The pack uses the records of the Jericho workhouse to explore issues of social care. The pack is free to download from the Archives Education page.
News: Grant awarded
The archives service has received a grant of £15,700 as part of the 2009 National Cataloguing Grant scheme. The scheme, funded by the Pilgrim and Esmee Fairbairn trust, is administered by the National Archives. The grant will be used to employ professional archivist cataloguing staff who will sort through the papers of the Bealey family and their company Bealey Bleachworks based in Radcliffe, cataloguing these records so they can be made available to the public.
Joanne Fitton, Archivist said “This project will make a real difference as it enables us to open up the story of the Bealey family to the local community as well as benefiting the national and international research community”.
News: Bury Image Bank
A new website is now available to search historical images of the area of Bury. The website supersedes what some library customers would know as Picture Memories. Bury Image Bank allows you to print images for your own research purposes or you can purchase photographic quality prints.
Introduction
Bury Archives Service was established in 1986 to manage both the historical records of the local authorities amalgamated to form Bury Metropolitan Borough in 1974, and records from private local organisations deposited over many years with the local library and museum services.
The records deposited with the service have increasingly been made accessible to the public and thanks to the continued co-operation of council officers and the generosity of private owners a great deal of new material has been deposited over the years.
The Archives Service holds varied unique records, including written documents, maps, plans and photographs. The types of organisations that these records cover are detailed in brief on the holdings summaries section of this website and records are searchable through the online catalogue. The Archives Service is not combined with Local Studies, for which records can be found in the Reference and Information section of Bury Library. Holdings for Local Studies include many published sources and the main resources for family history.
