Preventative work

Detached Youth Work Team

The detached youth work team work on the streets of Bury in areas identified by the police as hot spots for 'youths causing annoyance'. The team has a mobile information unit which has computers, sports and games which young people can access. The team works in close partnership with the police and other agencies to offer diversionary activities to young people with a view to preventing anti-social behaviour.

Youth Inclusion and Support Panels

YISPs seek to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour by children and young people aged 8-17 who are at risk of offending or anti-social behaviour. They offer work with these young people for quite a short time, and involve a number of organisations working together in their own communities.

How does YISP work?

Within Bury there are six YISP areas, each area has a multi-agency panel which meets regularly to consider how support can be given to children and young people referred to them. Each panel has representatives from Education, the Police, Social Services, Health, Youth Offending Team and Youth Service.

A YISP Co-ordinator will first have met the child/young person and their parents/carers to assess what, if anything is required. This assessment is presented to the panel to assist them in drawing up a plan (if one is needed).
