Young offending

Bury YOT supervises Orders on behalf of the court and works with young offenders and victims of crime. The YOT also undertakes preventative work with those young people who are at risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

How to get involved

When a young person under 17 is arrested, a parent, other relative or carer should be present at the police interview, unless there are exceptional circumstances which prevent this. Where such circumstances exist the YOT must provide an appropriate adult to ensure that young people's rights are protected. AAs are volunteers. If you would like to become an AA, please contact the AA Co-ordinator Alyson Whitlock on 0161 253 6895 / 6862.

Young people who are in court for the first time and plead guilty to the offence may receive a Referral Order. The court decides the length of the Order but then the young person must attend a Referral Order Panel which helps decide a contract with them. The panel is made up of volunteers. If you would like to become a volunteer panel member, please contact Eileen O'Neill on 0161 253 6862 / 6836 .
