How are properties allocated?

If your application has been accepted onto the housing register, you will be allocated a suitable property in one of the following ways.

  • An applicant can be allocated a property by Six Town Housing. When a property becomes vacant, Six Town Housing will allocate the property by selecting the person from the Council’s Housing Register who has been assessed as being in the greatest need. This is done by finding the applicant in the highest priority band who has waited longest to be rehoused; or

  • An applicant can express an interest with the Bury Home Options scheme (formerly Choice Based Lettings); or

  • An applicant can be nominated for a Housing Association property. We have nomination rights to 50% of all housing association vacancies within the borough. Applicants must be registered on Bury MBC's Housing Register to express an interest in a housing association property. You may qualify for a property if you have sufficient priority on the housing register.  Alternatively, you can apply direct to a housing association.

Applicants who live in the borough can also apply to be rehoused on medical grounds. There are certain conditions we don't take into account. You can download a list of examples. Download a list of excluded medical conditions (1 page, 22kb, pdf)
