Checklist
If you are looking for home care, here are some questions you may want to ask:
- How often will help be provided and at what time?
- How many different people will be coming into my home?
- What tasks can the helper undertake?
- What security measures are taken?
- Are staff qualified in administering medication, first aid etc?
- What if my needs change?
Similarly, if you require longer-term care you should visit several places to see what each can offer you. These are some questions you may like to ask:
- What is the area like? Is it near family and friends?
- Are visitors welcome at any time?
- Are the rooms single or shared?
- Can you take your personal possessions with you?
- What facilities are available e.g. lifts, TVs in bedrooms, telephones, personal alarm calls?
- Are the facilities easy to get to e.g. bathrooms? Do they have the necessary aids and equipment?
- What is the policy on alcohol and smoking?
- Are the staff fully trained?
- Is there a choice of food? Could you prepare your own?
- What about the financial issues? What is included in the fees?
You will have access to recent inspection reports as well as the brochures and someone there will be happy to discuss the findings of the report with you. Copies can be obtained from homeowners, managers or the Inspection and Registration Unit.
