How to become an Adult Placement Carer
- We hope you have found the Adult Placement Scheme webpages interesting. Once you have read them all, you may be interested in finding out more. You can telephone us for an informal chat on 0161 253 7243.
- Depending on how you have contacted us, we will visit you at home to give you more information on the Scheme. If you have family or someone else live in your house, it is important that they want to participate in the Scheme too. You will be asked to provide medical and personal references and must agree to a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced check for all people over 16 in your household.
- We will ask you to attend a training course that looks at the many issues involved in adult placement. This helps you become clear in your own mind about exactly what you would be committing yourself to.
- Once you have attended the course, the Adult Placement Co-ordinator will arrange to visit you at home to get to know you better. This also helps you look at how the family or household may be affected by someone living or staying with you. We will then write a report.
- Finally, your references and the report will have to be considered by a panel of senior officers from Social Care and Health. The Panel have the final say about your acceptance on the Scheme as an Approved Placement Carer
What happens when you have been approved as an Adult Placement carer?
- The Adult Placement Co-ordinator will match you with someone who will hopefully get on with you and your family. When a possible match is found, you are given details of each other and if both parties agree, you are introduced.
- An introductory period follows, during which time you can get to know each other better. If all goes well, the placement progresses from short visits to overnight where appropriate.
- Planned day support, short stays or a long-term placement will only happen when Adult Placement Carers and the person staying on the placement are ready. You can withdraw at any stage before this, or after the placement, if things are not working well.
- After a placement has gone ahead, Adult placement staff will visit regularly and review the placement from time to time.
Support for Adult Placement Carers
-
All Adult Placement Carers attend an assessment and training course before they can be approved to take a person into their home.
-
Once you have been approved and are on the Adult Placement Scheme, you can attend further training sessions and carers support groups.
-
Adult Placement staff will make regular visits to support Adult placement Carers, service users and their family to discuss progress and future plans.
-
They will make sure there is someone on call if there is a problem. If you are providing a long-term placement, they can arrange short breaks as and when necessary.
