The Safeguarding Unit (previously known as the conference and review unit) was established as part of the restructure of social care services in 1997. The unit became operational in July 1998. The primary purpose of the unit is to develop policies, procedural guidance and operational arrangements for child protection conferences and statutory child care reviews.
The main functions of the unit
- Independent chairing of child protection conferences, looked after children and some children in need reviews.
- Co-ordinate and service the work of the multi agency Bury Safeguarding Children Board.
- Monitor and review, child protection and children in need policies, procedures and practices and ensure high quality consistant practices
- Ensure the involvement of parents/carers and young people at meetings by promoting standards which enable their views to be heard.
- Collate information as requested by the Department for Children, Schools & Families (DCSF) and internal management team to improve service.
- Promote standards which value difference and treat people with respect
- Facilitate open and effective communication networks, both internally and externally.
In Septemeber 2000, Bury launched the family group meetings service. The project co-ordinator is based within the Safeguarding Unit. Family group meetings is a decision making and planning process that enables families to find their own solutions to any difficulties facing them, by using the skills and expertise of both families and professionals to inform those decisions.
