05 What support do carers receive?

Fostering is not an easy task. Looking after someone else's child can be demanding and we want to give foster carers a wide range of support to make sure the placement is as successful as possible.

We offer an excellent package of support to all our foster carers:-
  • Each carer has their own link worker from the family placement team who offers supervision, support and guidance through regular visits and telephone contact.
  • A Support group.
  • All applicants attend preparation sessions. Following approval carers are expected to attend post-approval sessions which explore specific issues such as managing children's behaviour, First Aid. Carers also have the opportunity to undertake NVQ.
  • The child in placement will also have their own social worker who will visit and keep carers informed of events.
  • A quarterly newsletter.
  • A comprehensive handbook of guidance for each carer.
  • Support Workers for carers who can offer additional support and practical assistance.
  • Equipment such as beds, bedding, wardrobe or buggy.
  • Outside office hours there is an emergency duty team available to offer advice in a crisis.
  • Advice is available from a Psychologist.
  • A 'buddy' scheme to link a new carer with an experienced carer.
