Self Directed Support Launches in Bury.
Date: Tuesday 8th July 2008
Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
Venue: Seedfield Resource Centre, Parkinson Street, Bury
On July 8th, Adult Care Services launched Self Directed Support (SDS) in Bury. A special event was held at the Seedfield Resource Centre which was officially opened with a speech from the Council's Chief Executive, Mark Sanders. The event was well attended by people from voluntary organisations, key partners and stakeholders, users of Adult Care Services, carers and Adult Care staff. A series of guest speakers presented throughout the day, followed by a number of workshops, in which people discussed the impact that SDS will have on the way support will be delivered in Bury.
Self Directed Support has evolved over a number of years; becoming a key Government policy agenda for social care and health through the White Paper, Our Health Our Care Our Say (2006 Department of Health), and more recently in Putting People First (2007, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, Local Government Association, National Health Service).
Self directed support gives people a new way to obtain the social care support that they need. It recognises that the person who is supported or given services, is the person best placed to understand their own needs and how to meet them.
Self directed support means that people can shape their support to fit in with their own lives, by giving them more control over deciding what support is needed; when it is received; and who it is provided by. It also means that the person needing social care will know, up front, how much money they have to spend on support, and can then arrange support that they think will best suit their lifestyle and needs.
