Organisation of the PCT
The PCT is a relatively new organisation having only come into being in April 2002. Its responsibilities are:
- Assessing health needs and planning health improvement.
- Securing the provision of services.
- Providing community based services.
- Commissioning family health services.
- Working with Local Authorities and other partners, to maximise opportunities for patients, users and carers, by working towards a seamless service.
The health services available to Bury are broadly provided in 4 ways:
- Those services (mainly community health services) provided directly by PCT staff.
- Primary Care Services (family health services) provided through national contracts with GP's, pharmacists, opticians and dentists.
- Hospital services commissioned by the PCT on behalf of the population of Bury: i.e. locally at Fairfield General Hospital Bury and over 20 other hospitals.
- A range of specific services provided by voluntary or none-statutory agencies with some NHS funding, such as Bury Hospice.
NHS Services directly provided by PCT staff include:

- Orthoptic Services (eyes)
- Speech and language therapy services
- Community dental services and Dental Access Centre service provision
- Walk in Centre
- Podiatry services (feet)
- Learning disability services
- Occupational therapy
- Dietetic services (nutrition/diet)
- Family planning services
- YPAS (Young Persons Advisory Service)
- Specialist nursing services. Including Breast Care Nurses, Macmillan Nurses, Palliative Care Nurses (Palliative care is a remedy that relieves pain without curing)
- Health promotion
- Child protection
Although the PCT purchases specific services from a variety of hospitals outside of Bury, most hospital services are commissioned from Pennine Acute Hospital NHS Trust through Fairfield General Hospital Bury, and mental health services, including Child and Adolescent Mental health Services (CAMHS), through the Pennine Care NHS Trust.

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust was established in April 2002 and manages hospitals in Bury, North Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale.
It employs a staff of 10,000 across five hospital sites:
- Fairfield General Hospital, Bury
- North Manchester General Hospital
- The Royal Oldham Hospital
- Rochdale Infirmary
- Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale
They provide district general hospital services including; accident and emergency, critical care, inpatient and day case services, outpatient services, pathology, pharmacy and radiological/other investigative services.
Orthopaedics, paediatrics, maternity, cardiology, ophthalmology, ENT, dental and urology are just some of the range of specialities provided by the Trust.
