What do the Disability Team do?

If you have a disability the team can offer you and your carer an assessment to identify equipment or adaptations which promote your independence within your home. The team has two sections as well as the stores for equipment and an administration team to provide support.

Sensory Section

The section includes social workers for hearing and visual impairment that undertake specialist assessments of people with sensory loss. Rehabilitation officers for hearing impaired can assess for specialist equipment and provide expert advice about living with hearing loss. Rehabilitation officers for the visually impaired help blind people with daily living tasks or mobility problems resulting from the visual loss by offering a programme of training and support.

Physical Section

This section works with people with mainly a physical disability. They assess their physical and environmental needs to assist with daily life activities like getting in and out of the house, access to rooms within the house and access to bathing facilities. The team consists of disability officers and occupational therapist. The team also assesses and makes recommendations for adaptations to the home if equipment cannot meet the person needs.

Both sections work within the councils eligibility criteria for equipment and adaptations. Further information can be found by following this link

They also work within the legislation laid down in the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970, the National Assistance Act 1948 and other disability legislation.

Stores

The equipment is ordered, stored, delivered and collected by a small team of drivers and a store manager. The drivers and a technician install and fit the equipment safely into your home as required.

Administration

This section is the first point of contact for all the referrals for people who request an assessment. Information is also given to people where they can access the appropriate service for themselves if they want to.

The section also processes the orders and arranges delivery of equipment to the disabled people. They also arrange collections of equipment, which is no longer required and can be used by someone else. It is important that any equipment, which does not meet the need of the disabled person, is returned, cleaned and delivered to another disabled person.

The section also administers the blue badge parking concessions scheme for disabled and blind people.
