The aim of the team are as follows:-
To ensure that the individual needs of hearing impaired children and young people are met.
The roles of the team are as follows:-
- To work in partnership with the families and schools of hearing impaired children from the age of diagnosis until the children complete their full-time education;
- To support pre-school and school aged children through the code of practice;
- To inform parents about the whole range of educational choices available
The majority of children are integrated into mainstream schools. To facilitate inclusion and full access to the national curriculum the team will provide, where appropriate:
- Support teaching
- Advice on teaching strategies and modification of teaching materials;
- Radio systems to enable children to make effective use of hearing aids and cochlear implants;
- Classroom amplification systems;
- Regular monitoring and maintenance of hearing aids, cochlear implant systems and radio systems;
- Contribution to on-going audiological assessments;
- Educational assessments;
- Regular monitoring of speech, language and communication skills;
- In-service training and information to develop awareness and understanding of the implications of hearing impairment;
- Advice to schools regarding application for special arrangements and special consideration in external examinations and Standard Assessment Tests (SATs);
- Information to other agencies involved with the child;
- Regular family support and pre-school groups;
- Introductory course in sign language for parents and school staff
- The team also monitors provision and continues to support the families of those children educated in schools other than mainstream.
The team is made up of:
A Team Manager,
6 Full Time equivalent Teachers of the Hearing Impaired,
4 Full Time equivalent Special Support Assistants.
