What is Home Tuition?
Home Tuition is education for pupils who are unable to attend school because of medical needs. For example when:
Home Tuition is:
- A partnership between the Local Authority, pupil, family and tutor,
- A short term intervention, which is not intended as a replacement for full time education in school,
- Provided for up to 5 hours in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2; 6 hours in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. However where pupils are too poorly to be taught or pupils and families do not work in partnership with the tutor, the provision may be reduced.
What does Home Tuition aim to do?
Home Tuition aims to provide continuity of educational provision during a period of illness.
What will the Home Tutor do?
The Home Tutor will:
- Attend the reintegration planning meeting,
- Meet with you and your child and plan the timetable for teaching,
- Liaise with the named person in your child's school to establish a work schedule,
- Maintain attendance and punctuality records for your child as appropriate, particularly for tuition out of the home,
- Prepare a written report on your child's progress,
- Withdraw teaching if your child is too poorly or is not responding to the tuition, and refer the case to the Manager of Home Tuition.
Referral to Home Tuition can be made by:
- Parents,
- Education Welfare Officer,
- Hospital Staff,
- Teachers and Head Teachers.
We will need to know the following information about your child:
- Name,
- Address and Telephone Number,
- Date of Birth,
- Name of Parent/Teacher,
- School attended,
- The nature of the illness - with written medical evidence,
- Estimated duration of absence.
It is a requirement of home tuition for a parent or carer to be in the house all of the time the tutor is teaching.
What will the Home Tuition Team do?
- Support the school in establishing a personal education plan for your child which will include the planned reintegration into full time education,
- Appoint a Home Tutor,
- Provide you and the school with written details of the tuition to be put in place,
- Arrange for the Tutor to contact the school and liaise with the person in school responsible for your child - this is usually the class teacher or the head of year,
- Monitor progress of the provision on a regular basis,
- Provide translation of written information and access to an interpreter, where applicable.
What is the Parent /Carers role?
- To support their child with the work the home tutor prepares for homework in between visits,
- Inform the home tutor and the service manager as soon as possible if the child is too poorly for the planned lesson,
- Encourage their child's friends to visit or telephone to keep him/her up to date with school events,
- Support e-mail contact with school and friends, where there is access to a computer.
