The £350 million major development of retail and leisure space in a previously run down area of Bury town centre can now clearly be seen to be taking shape and as such is on target to open to the public in the summer of 2010.

In terms of the retail scheme, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer will anchor the development. The Debenhams store will be 103,000 sq ft and Marks and Spencer, 75,000 sq ft. Additionally, there will be a number of large double-height, flagship units ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 sq ft and two of these have already been pre-let to Next and River Island. On top of this there will be a further 50 standard shop units making a total of 500,000 sq ft.

The leisure quarter totalling 100,000 sq ft, will offer a striking new ten screen cinema (pre-let to Vue) as well as other family entertainment facilities. A 25-lane ten pin bowling unit has already been pre-let to AMF, and one of 8 family themed restaurant units has been pre-let to Pizza Express.

On completion the leisure quarter will provide a vibrant and accessible evening destination suitable for all the family.

The new Primary Care Trust medical centre is due to open during the autumn and will offer a range of services from child health care and dentistry to minor surgery, a GP-led health centre and a pharmacy.

Ultimately, the overall scheme will also include 397 new residential apartments, interwoven with the commercial scheme.
