Bury's environment

Bury Metro Council seeks to protect and enhance the environment in a range of ways.

In Bury we are committed to making our town a great place in which to live, work, study and visit.  Our ambition is to provide first class public spaces, local parks and green spaces, to be a premier retail town in the North of Greater Manchester and to make Bury a popular visitor destination.

Our vision is to work with residents, businesses and partners towards creating a 'cleaner, safer, greener' Borough.

In 2004 Bury was the proud winner of 'Best Large Town in the North West' in the regional Royal Horticultural Society North West in Bloom Competition and was nominated to represent the region in the national Britain in Bloom competition in 2005.

In September 2005 Bury scooped first prize in the 'Large Town category', of North West in Bloom, for the second year running and also picked-up a discretionary award 'Best Feature in a Public Place' for the special floral tribute to the East Lancs Railway at Sparrow Park.

In Britain in Bloom 2005 Bury were successful in achieving a silver medal which means our entry met most of the judging criteria and objectives of Britain in Bloom, included more than one section which demonstrates exceptionally high standards and, in particular, demonstrated good sustainable standards and the potential to progress to Silver-Gilt standard.

'Bury in Bloom' helps towards our vision for a 'cleaner, safer, greener' Borough by helping to regenerate our local environment by the imaginative planting of trees and shrubs, flowers and landscaping and also by conserving wildlife and nature and dealing with environmental issues such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.
