Litter is one of the main topics that the people who live in the borough of Bury are most concerned about. It costs £1.6 million each year to keep the streets of Bury clean. We have six area based street care teams that work hard to make sure we fulfil our duty to keep the streets, public places, parks and playgrounds clean.
Other organisations, including schools, colleges and the Highways Agency also have a duty to keep their land clear of litter. Cleaning up our litter costs all these organisations money, which we the tax payer end up paying. If we all protected the environment from littering these funds could be put to better public use.
The Bury Metro ‘No excuses’ litter education and enforcement campaign is all about everyone looking after the environment. This includes individuals, businesses and private landowners.

Education and awareness programme
A variety of methods are being utilised to help educate people to the problems of littering and to raise awareness. Our programme includes:
- Posters available for schools, colleges and community groups.
- Enforcement officers available to attend school assemblies and class sessions.
- Events with visual displays offering consultation opportunities.
- Visual campaigns including on and in buses in the Borough and on litter bins.
- Liaison with businesses, pubs and fast food outlets.
- Community clean-ups and litter picks.
