Bulky items

Bury Council provides a Borough-wide bulky household waste collection service.  Collection charges are on a sliding scale according to how many items are collected.

What are the charges?

Charges in Bury are comparable with charges elsewhere and are on a sliding scale according to how many items are collected.

The charges are as follows.

  • £10 for up to three items;
  • £20 for four to six items;
  • £30 for seven to nine items.

Payment will need to be made in full in advance of the arranged collection.

Are there any exemptions from the charges?

Residents in receipt of Council Tax benefit can request an exemption from the charges for one free collection per year.

When do you collect from my area?

Collection days and locations are as follows:

Monday - collections from the Prestwich area.

Tuesday - collections from Whitefield and Radcliffe.

Wednesday - collections from Bury and Radcliffe.

Thursday - collections from Bury and Radcliffe.

Friday - collections from Ramsbottom, Tottington and Greenmount.

What is bulky household waste?

Examples of bulky household waste items include three piece suites, small units, tables, carpets, beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bookcases, microwaves, cookers, stereos, dining tables and chairs, barbecues, electric heaters, computer equipment (not monitors), bikes, lightweight garden furniture and all electrical white goods (eg fridges and washers).

If you are unsure about any items you wish to dispose of our Customer Contact Team will be able to help you.

What items cannot be collected?

The types of things we cannot take are bathroom suites, kitchen units, doors, window frames, garages, sheds, televisions, computer monitors, sunbeds and flourescent tubes. These items can be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Where are the Household Waste Recycling Centres?

  • Fernhill Depot, Every Street in Bury;
  • Cemetery Road in Radcliffe; and
  • Clifton Road in Prestwich.

Go to the recycling facilities web page to find out the right recycling centre for the type of material you want to recycle.

Are there any other ways I can dispose of my bulky items?

There are a number of ways that residents can dispose of bulky or other re-useable household items, free of charge.  These include:

  • donation to a local charity, the local community voluntary sector or local second hand shops;
  • selling items through free ads; or
  • giving items to friends or relatives.

Alternatively, residents can take their waste items to one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
