Dry cell batteries

Dry cell batteries (household batteries), used to power a whole range of every day gadgets, are thrown away in their millions.  However, because they contain heavy metals they are a serious environmental hazard when taken to landfill sites.

Now dry cell battery recycling containers have been issued to all of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority's (GMWDA) household waste recycling centres, including

Cemetery Road, Radcliffe

Nationally, around 700,000 million household batteries - amounting to 30,000 tonnes worth - are sent to landfill sites every year.  The recycling rate for dead car batteries is 90 per cent but for used dry cell batteries it is currently only 5 per cent.
