Introduction
Good air quality is essential for health and quality of life. Fortunately, the pea-souper smogs of the 1950s caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal are now a thing of the past. This type of pollution decreased significantly as a result of tighter regulation using clean air laws.

Today the biggest problem we face is from traffic pollution. This pollution is mainly invisible and therefore many people believe that we don’t have a problem. However, vehicle emissions can have harmful effects particularly on vulnerable people such as the elderly and the sick.
The Government and local councils are working to improve air quality and we hope that the pages in this section will help you understand more about current pollution issues and what we are doing about it in Bury.
