Kirklees Valley

Kirklees Valley waterlillies Kirklees lakeside in summer

The Kirklees Valley is an industrialised tributary of the Irwell, north of Bury. Although it contains the remains of a number of industrial installations, it is still attractive and much of the valley is a Site of Biological Importance.

As part of the redevelopment for housing of two of the former mill sites, a considerable area of the valley has, or is to be transferred into the ownership of Bury Council. A Friends group has been set up to discuss how this land should be improved for public use. It is likely that it will be developed as a Local Nature Reserve.

The main route up the valley is the Kirklees Trail, which uses the bed of the former Holcombe Brook railway line. There is currently a missing section between Pickering Close and Brandlesholme Road, funding for the construction of which has been gained via the successful Connect2 lottery bid.
